Nestled in the heart of Alberobello's historic centre, just beside the Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian, Trulli Arcolaia is part of an ancient courtyard whose origins, according to its architectural features and traditional construction techniques, date back to the mid-17th century. For centuries, these spaces were woven into the everyday life of the local community, in a neighbourhood where trulli were never simply picturesque buildings, but an essential part of daily life.
On the first floor of the courtyard lies the former hayloft. Here, hay and grain were once lowered through an opening in the great stone cones, following a simple yet ingenious method that still reflects Alberobello's rural heritage.
During the 18th century, the courtyard gradually acquired the appearance it retains today, with its stone façade and the impressive entrance arch that continues to welcome visitors into this historic setting.
Today, the building has been carefully restored, preserving its original stonework, natural light and authentic character while offering the comfort of a contemporary stay. The Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian, the Trullo Sovrano, the artisan workshops and the UNESCO World Heritage historic centre are all just a short walk away.
